EQ: How do you add musicality to a piece?

Monday, October 19, 2009
You guys did a great job today but we still have much work left to do. Please make sure you are practicing at home so that we can maximize rehearsal during class. You do not need your book this week because we will focus solely on your concert pieces.

Everday: C, G, D, and A major scale--half, quarter, and eighth notes
Dance Scenario--we will play this everyday from 73 till the end to make sure we fix the balance and dynamic issues during this section. 2nd violins make sure you practice 86 to the end so that you are confident in your playing.
End Pin Rag--we will focus on measure 38 to the end with a special emphasis on the rhythm (count the rests). Also cellos make sure you are breathing together as a section on the eighth rests and play with a lot of bow so that you get a full sound.
Mouse Batallion--all students need to make sure they focus on the eighth note ostinato at the beginning and measure 12 for cello/ bass. Right now the first violins are leading but every section needs to lead so that we have a huge sound.
Hot Potato--PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE! Your eighth notes went well on Monday but keep working on it so that you are confident for your concert.
Dragon Dances--DYNAMICS! DYNAMICS! DYNAMICS! We can play the notes with no problem but a piece of music with no dynamic contrast is boring. Make sure your part is marked and that you are looking up to see what MC wants you to do. I am so proud of your work on this piece but it is only 50% there.
El Toro---this piece is amazing but we need a soloist. If you are interested please see MC ASAP!
Fiddle Pieces--we will be working on getting them faster and the last piece. Once again who wants to be a soloist?

Learning Goals
  1. Be prepared for the concert next week
  2. Confidently apply dynamics and phrasings that add musicality to the piece
  3. Play through all pieces by Friday with no major complications
