This week students will continue working on their festival pieces with emphasis on balance, dynamics, and uniform articulations.  Thursday you will begin your two part composition with a partner who plays a different instrument than you.  If you have no one to work with one then you You will have your seating arrangements by Wednesday so make sure you check the blog or the wall outside the door.  ALL 5TH PERIOD STUDENTS NEED TO HAVE THEIR QUEEN PARTS LABELED WITH DYNAMICS BY THURSDAY!!!

Friday we will record Eastside and Stringtown Stroll for a test grade.

Monday, February 1, 2010
Monday:  Terms Test review, Stringtown Stroll and Midnight Tango.

Tuesday:  Rhythmic Dictation, articulation and dynamic contrast within the a minor melodic scale--we will learn how to come down the scale, and quiz on the first 8 measures of Eastside Boogaloo.  We will also continue going through the Eastside Boogaloo melodies so that we can begin the real Eastside piece.

Stringtown Stroll with a special focus on the first 18 measures: intonation, articulation, and dynmaics
Play and record Goin to Boston --reflect on how we have grown and what we have left to do

Wednesday:  Daily Warm-up, Listening Log, a minor scale with articulation and dynamic contrasts.
Quiz on Eastside Boogaloo measures 5-12 with emphasis on articulation and intonation.  We will also work on matching bow strokes and style in Prelude in E Minor.

Continue work from yesterday on Stringtown Stroll and begin working on 32-end for Queen of Sheba.  First violins need to focus on intonation while all other instruments need to focus on the Baroque articulation.

Thursday:  Daily Warm-up, 2-part Composition rules introduction, Rhythmic Dictation, and continue work from Tuesday and Wednesday.  Quiz on Eastside Boogaloo measures 27-end.  Students will be graded by section on their ability to create extreme dynamic contrasts within the minor scale.

Friday:  Test on Eastside Boogaloo and Stringtown Stroll.  Practice sight-reading techniques after the test.

EQ: How do you apply the fundamentals of music when learning new repertoire?

Monday:  Daily Warm-up (5-10), continue dynamic contrast with A minor scale using rhythmic patterns from Midnight Tango.  We will begin working on measures 16 to the end this week with special emphasis on intonation.


Tuesday:  Daily Warm-up (5-10), continue dynamic contrast with E minor scale using rhythmic patterns from Queen of Sheba.  We will continue working on the opening 32 measures especially with articulation and balance.

Wednesday:  Daily Warm-up, Rhythmic Dictation, Shifting exercises, and continue working on Midnight Tango with special focus on Violins- measures 16 through the end:  articulations (accents) and intonation (low 2 on D, A, and E).....Viola/ Cello- measure 16 through the end:  articulations (accents), intonation, and fluid bow movements.

Midnight Tango: Review bow strokes from last week with quiz on accents
Entrance to the Queen of Sheba: 1st violins will work on intonation and ensemble while the rest of the class learns how to play in the Baroque style and accompany a melody
 Goin to Boston: Play through and mark all necessary accidentals, melodies, articulations, etc...

Wednesday:  Daily Warm-up, Rhythmic Dictation, Shifting exercises, dynamic contrast within the A minor scale, and continue working on Midnight Tango with special focus on
Violins- measures 16 through the end:  articulations (accents) and intonation (low 2 on D, A, and E)
Viola/ Cello- measure 16 through the end:  articulations (accents), intonation, and fluid bow movements.

Entrance to the Queen of Sheba:  we will evaluate where we are via recording

Goin to Boston: melody for rhythmic accuracy and intonation.....how is this similar to the intro you played last week?

Tuesday:  Daily Warm-up, Rhythmic Dictation, Shifting exercises, dynamic contrast within the a minor scale, and continue working on Midnight Tango with special focus on
Violins- the first 8 measures:  articulations (accents) and intonation (low 2 on D, A, and E)
Viola/ Cello- measure 9-16:  articulations (accents), intonation, and fluid bow movements.

Entrance to the Queen of Sheba with a special focus on:
Violins- the first 25 measures: intonation and rhythm
Viola/ Cello/ Bass- How do you support the melody?  Make sure you have short bow strokes and that you follow the contour of the line.

Continue working on Goin to Boston melody for rhythmic accuracy and intonation---if you can say the rhythm then you can play the rhythm.

Winter Concerts

Tis the season for many concerts:
Tuesday, December 8th 4th period Orchestra will perform at NCHS at 5pm for the annual NCHS Orchestra Dinner Theatre

Tuesday, December 8th Full Symphony will play on the Band Concert Night beginning at 7pm

Thursday, December 10th  6th Grade Ensemble, 7th Grade Orchestras, and 8th Grade Orchestra will perform at Awtrey at 7pm in the theatre.

Tuesday, December 15th Vivace Ensemble will perform with the Chorus beginning at 7pm.  The orchestra will not begin performing until 7:30pm although parents are encouraged to attend the Chorus performance at 7pm.
