We will be focusing primarily on learning Kwanzaa Celebration and the slow section of Irish Suite. Kwanzaa is an African American seven day celebration of family, community, and culture. Can you name the two different African folk songs that are within the piece? Even though this piece is in a familiar piece----MARK YOUR MUSIC!!! Wednesday you will play the F scale with your section for a grade WITH Smart Music.
We will also begin the Lullaby section of Irish Suite. This section is not in 6/8, how does that change how you count? Also this section is slow so you MUST COUNT!!!! Dynamics are more important in slow pieces, why? How do you achieve extreme dynamic contrasts? Thursday you will have a written assessment on the history of Kwanzaa and how we can represent that history within our music.
You need to be working on the eighth notes in Irish Suite from 180 to the end.....we have already learned this in class but you need to use the practice techniques located on the board to help you learn the notes in the correct tempo. We will play this once daily, gradually getting faster but if you don't practice at home it will not get better.
Lastly we will continue polishing Rockin the Housetop especially the eighth notes in the violin and viola parts. Remember head banging is apart of this piece :) How do you play a shuffle boogie blues? What is a shuffle boogie blues?
Friday you will have a test on Irish Suite--180 to the end along with Rockin the Housetop (the first page) in octets. I will be listening for accurate intonation, bowing (YOU MUST DO THE ACCENTS), and style. You must have all of those aspects to achieve an A. Make sure during sectionals on Wednesday you focus on the above areas with your stand partner. If your part is not marked, you will NOT succeed.
Learning Goal:
- Play Irish Suite 180 to the end with accurate intonation, rhythm, and style
- Demonstrate an understanding of Kwanzaa and how to portray that meaning in your music.
- Play Rockin the Housetop in the blues style
